Sunnyvale, California. June 6, 2016. Nuvation Engineering has announced that their battery management system for large-scale energy storage systems (ESS) is now conformant with Draft 3 of the MESA-Device/SunSpec Energy Storage Model. “MESA Draft 3 conformant products share a common communications interface that exposes all the data and control points required for operating the energy storage system,” said John Corman, Vice-President, Engineering and Product Management at Nuvation. “Nuvation BMS can now be integrated with any other MESA-conformant energy storage hardware or software without the custom middleware often required to enable different companies’ products to work together.”

The MESA (Modular Energy Storage Architecture) Alliance is a California-based non-profit organization that was created to develop shared open standards and communication protocols for energy storage systems. Its work includes close collaboration with related groups including the SunSpec Alliance and the Electric Power Research Institute. MESA members include many of the energy storage industry’s leading utilities, ESS developers, battery manufacturers, energy management companies, and power conversion system (PCS) manufacturers. The goals of this industry-driven effort towards standardization include giving electrical utilities more choice by enabling multi-vendor, component-based energy storage systems.

Nuvation Engineering joined MESA in February, 2015 and is currently collaborating with other MESA members to develop the Draft 4 specification. Draft 4 will include new battery models that expose significant additional measurement and performance data for lithium-ion batteries. In addition, it will include definitions for commonly used terms such as “State of Health” and “State of Charge,” which can often be a source of confusion within the energy storage industry.
